5. Ultrafine Particles and HyperHEPA Filtration

The IQAir HealthPro Plus is in a league of its own when it comes to air cleaning because of its patented HyperHEPA Filter, which works about 100 times better than most other ordinary True HEPA filters out there. To understand how the HyperHEPA filtration is different, we first need to understand particle sizes. Airborne particles come in lots of different sizes, and to filter out the smallest of particles, you need a very specialized type of filter media. Most ordinary filters can remove the medium and larger sized particles from the air pretty well. In fact, any True HEPA filter can filter out most particles as small as 0.3 microns in size. But the reality is there are so many more particles in your air that are smaller than this, and only IQAr's HyperHEPA filter is capable of removing them effectively. These are the "Ultrafine" particles.

Ultrafine refers to those particles that are smaller than 0.1 microns. Just to give you an idea of how small this is, a micron is an abbreviated term for "micrometer", which is one-millionth of a meter; so 0.1 microns is 1/10th of one-millionth of a meter (that's pretty small!). For comparison, one thousand Ultrafine particles can fit across the width of a single human hair. These tiny Ultrafine particles are the smallest pollutants in the air we breathe, yet they represent about 90 percent of all pollution particles in the air. These particles can come from vehicle exhaust fumes, industrial plants and refineries, gas and electric cooking, cigarette smoke, candle burning, and painting, and also come in the form of bacteria and viruses. Due to their extremely small size, they can be easily inhaled into the lungs and absorbed into the bloodstream. Ultrafine particles have been linked to heart attacks, strokes, asthma and even cancer.

Now that we know about Ultrafine particles, how do we remove them from the air we breathe? Most air purifiers that advertise True HEPA filtration claim filtration of particles as small as 0.3 microns.
